2 looks, 1 t-shirt dress.

I got a new toy today, yeah.  A tailor's dummy, purchased for the purpose of making more effective ebay sale's of the pieces my clients no longer require but as I'm sure you know by now I love to get my monies worth out of any item. Hence today's blog - any excuse to play with clothes.  My goal today was to show the different ways that 2 women of entirely different age ranges might wear what is essentially the same outfit ie on the left my Mother and below and to the right me.  I don't really like to repeat myself but on this point I hope to make myself clear:- There is no piece of clothing you can't wear, as long as you style it appropriately.

For Mum, we have skinny jeans, a silk scarf and black patent heels - by using the dress as a long top she can feel comfortable and the dress will rouche to emphasize her shape and disguise any unfortunate lumpy bits.  The colour is understated but by adding the lustre of the silk the textures and layers give the outfit more interest.

This is how I went out today.  The boots are heavy knee length bikers with strap detail, which is mirrored (not matched) by the grey suede handbag, that also has strap detail.  For me the dress was a little blocky so I broke this up with an embellished belt worn slung low on the hip.  The scarf was essentially because it's cold out there today and style should not mean the total desertion of comfort.

So what do I mean by style it appropriately, I know that sounds quite pious.  Say for example you take the jeans out of my Mum's outfit suddenly the dress is pretty short and with heels as well - Hello Mutton, I see you came as lamb today.  Conversely if she wore it with a wide leg jean it just becomes a long t-shirt and is a little dull for her.  Without the texture variations it would be a fairly dull out fit in general.  For me I could have gone further out of the box put in some big bold colour, maybe a quick blast of bright purple or ochre yellow, but I just wanted to keep it simple, so I did.  Now imagine if I had gone further like a huge statement piece of jewellery, or take off the scarf and add in a faux fur collar.  Yes it fits with the trend, I'm nodding too but people would run from me in the street.  In these boots I'm over 6ft tall, add in fur and someone is going to yell Yeti - no one wants that!  As I'm quite imposing, most days I try to keep my style quite soft, but that's my choice not a rule, there are also days that I wear an Electric blue dress with 5inch heels.

The clothes you choose to wear should be a reflection of your mood, not the fact you are a certain age, weight or profession.
